5 Tips for Chemically Treated Hair Care

Chemically

Chemically treated hair is more commonplace than ever – most of us get a little help in this department – whether it’s subtle highlights or relaxed locks. The science behind hair has given us more flexibility and allowed us to drastically change our look when we want to.

There are a few different types of chemical treatments for hair:

  • Permanent colour
  • Hair relaxers (or straight perms)
  • Curly perms
  • Bleach
  • Colour removers

If you have chemically treated hair, you’ll want to adapt your hair care routine to make sure that your tresses stay strong and healthy. When you’re at the salon, talk to your stylist about any treatments you’ve had before and get their recommendations for care specific to your hair type.

Here are our tips for taking care of your chemically treated hair:

  1. Protect When Styling With Heat

It’s best to reduce heat styling after you’ve had a chemical treatment. But we all know how hard it can be to give up our straighteners and curling irons. If you are going to use a hot appliance, make sure to always apply a defensive product to your hair first. This will prevent breakage and damage.

  1. Keep it Gentle

Don’t comb or brush chemically treated hair too vigorously, and don’t brush it more than twice a day. Make sure to never brush when wet. Instead, use a leave-in detangling product and comb from bottom to top with a wide-toothed comp.

  1. Using the Right Products

Regular products may dry out your hair (due to higher levels of alcohol and other ingredients) – replace these with nutrient rich shampoos and conditioners.  For colour-treated hair, we recommend Biotop 911. If you have relaxed hair, we recommend Design Essentials – try the Honey Creme Moisture Retention Shampoo for smooth, silky hair. It’s important to note that you should wait up to a week before washing your hair after having it relaxed.

  1. Don’t Over Wash!

Chemically treated hair can get dehydrated, so make sure not to over-expose it to hot water and shampoo (even the good kinds!). You don’t want to strip your hair of nutrients. Washing every second day should do, and never skip a day of conditioning.

  1. Get Your Hair Trimmed Regularly

To avoid split ends, make sure to get regular hair trims. By getting those dehydrated tips snipped off, you’ll keep your hair looking fresh and healthy!
