Winter is coming, and the Toronto cold can do a number on your hair if the necessary steps aren’t taken to protect your mane. Because of the icy temperatures, our hair tends to get more dry and brittle in the winter, which means it’s more susceptible to breakage and damage.
Here are Studio 86 Salon’s tips for shiny, soft and healthy winter hair:
Avoid heat damage
Because our hair is more susceptible to damage in the cold months, styling with heat daily is a major no. This can cause serious breakage. Instead, try to change up your routine so that you are only using heat to style your hair 2-3 times a week. Steaming hot showers may also be tempted, but showering with water that is too hot can also damage and dry out hair.
Getting your hair trimmed regularly is recommended all year long, but it is especially important in the winter. Trims help to avoid split ends and keep your hair looking fresh. We recommend getting your hair cut every three to four months for healthy locks.
Chill on the shampoo
How often do you shampoo your hair? Your shampoo routine should change in the winter, along with your other hair care routines. Keeping shampooing to a minimum will avoid stripping your hair of the natural oils that your scalp produces. It may feel a little greasier at first, but after a week or so, your hair will adapt and have a healthy shine. We recommend the Design Essentials Honey Crème Moisture Retention Shampoo to keep your hair feeling soft.
Soak up the moisture!
Condition, condition, condition! We cannot stress this enough. Chances are, you may need to switch to a different conditioner for the winter – we LOVE the Almond & Avocado Moisturizing & Detangling Conditioner by Design Essentials. We also recommend a deep conditioning treatment once a week to keep things smooth and frizz-free.
Using protective styles is an excellent way to protect your hair from damage in the winter. You can also cover or wrap your hair in a silk scarf, and wear your hair in up dos to prevent exposure to the dry air.
