Who doesn’t love an excuse for a makeover?! Here at Studio 86 hair salon in Toronto, we LOVE IT when our clients get adventurous and go for big changes with their hair. Whether it’s a bold new colour, cut or style for the season, it’s always fun to try a new look, and we love to get creative!

Tips for a Successful Makeover

If you’re thinking of making a big change to your hair, we’ve got some tips for helping you make the right choice so you end up loving (not loathing) your new look:

1.) Know what works with your face shape and complexion

This one is pretty obvious, but if you’re going for a drastic hairstyle change, make sure it flatters your face shape. The same goes for your hair colour and your complexion. It’s always a good idea to pick up some magazines and cut out hairstyles and colours you like, then consult with your stylist about whether or not that particular cut and shade will work for you.

2.) Be true to your personal brand

Basically, don’t get a mohawk if you’re a kindergarten teacher, don’t get a buzz cut if you’re a girly girl, don’t shave half your head if you usually shop at the Gap… you get the idea. Choose a new cut and style that might be different than your usual, but won’t make you feel uncomfortable in your own skin. Be true to you!

3.) Make sure the hairstyle fits your lifestyle

Some of the more adventurous cuts aren’t simply ‘wash and go’… they can take time and care to style just right before you leave the house. Keep your lifestyle in mind. If you love spending time getting ready, a more intricate cut may be for you. If you’re more of a no-nonsense person when it comes to your beauty routine, try a low-maintenance style.

Pro tip: Ask your hairstylist for tips on how to make your new cut look great at home. There’s nothing worse than feeling fresh to death after leaving the salon, then trying to replicate it at home and failing miserably.

4.) Go to a stylist your trust

Whenever you make a drastic hair change, it’s important to do it with a stylist you trust to get the best results. If you’ve been seeing the same stylist for a while, chance are they know your taste and what will look good on you. If you’re not sure which way your makeover should go, they’ll likely have some fun suggestions.

Fall Hair Trends 2014

There were lots of surprises on fall runways hair-wise. Here are some of our favourites:

Braids

Harper’s Bazaar named braids as one of the hottest hair trends for fall. In fact, braided hairstyles appeared on several Fall 2014 runways, including Marc by Marc Jacobs, Givenchy, Nicole Miller and Dolce & Gabbana.

At Studio 86, we have several braid specialists on staff who can help you find a creative braided style, whether that’s cornrows that last for weeks, or a pretty braided up-do for a special event.

Centre Parts

Hairstyles with parts right down the middle were also a huge hit on fall runways. If you want to start wearing a centre part, be sure your current cut works with it, or talk to your stylist about getting one that does.

Retro

A lot of runways also featured teased up retro-style hair, whether in a sleek bob elevated at the back, or big up-dos. Bobs work really well for this style, so if you like it, talk to your stylist about getting a retro bob you can tease up when the mood strikes. Your stylist can also give you teasing pointers so you don’t end up with a lumpy mess.

Pixie with Fringe

Ricardo Rojas, stylist to Zoe Saldana, Eva Longoria and Jessica Chastain, told Elle Magazine that the pixie cut is hot this season, and this time, it’s got side-swept bangs that make it more grown up. Think Robin Wright Penn and Miley Cyrus.

Mermaid Hair

An Elle Magazine poll revealed that this hairstyle has been the most requested over the past eight years, and it’s not going anywhere. Who wouldn’t die for a gorgeous, flowing cascade of Beyonce hair? If you don’t have the patience to wait for your hair to grow out and you want a bold, gorgeous new look for the new season, why not try a weave? Our weave specialists at Studio 86 are certainly up for the challenge. 😉
