Protective Winter Hairstyles for Natural Hair

Cornrows are a protective hairstyle

In the winter months, highly textured, natural hair becomes more prone to dryness and breakage than any other time of year. In addition to choosing haircare products that replenish your hair’s moisture (check out our 5 Must-Have Hair Products to Beat Winter Dryness), we recommend wearing protective hairstyles in the wintertime.

Protective styles are a great choice for many reasons, and they aren’t only beneficial in the winter. They protect your hair from the elements and also give it a break from heat styling. This can help prevent breakage and improve your hair’s overall condition. On top of that, there are many protective styles out there, so you won’t have a problem finding a look that works for you. Here are a few options:

Buns might be one of the easiest protective hairstyle options. They’re also great because they completely cover your ends, which are the most prone to breakage in the cold, dry months. Here’s a fun high bun tutorial:

Braids are a great way to get creative with your protective hairstyling because there are plenty of braid styles to try and they’re also relatively low maintenance. We already covered several braid styles, plus we found this great tutorial for a quick braid and tuck:

Twists are another fun option for protecting your locks during the winter. Like braids, twists come in many shapes, sizes and styles. We think these “Marley Twists” are super pretty. Here’s how you can do them yourself:

Most people think of weaves as a means of lengthening you hair when you can’t wait for it to grow out, but they’re also a great way to protect your natural hair from weather or styling damage. If you’re thinking of this option, check out our post on Pro Tips for Beautiful Weave Hairstyles.
