A healthy scalp is important for healthy hair (as we discussed in our previous blog post: Top 5 Tips for a Healthy Scalp). Think of it like grass growing in a field–if the soil conditions are optimal, the grass will grow healthy and strong. If the skin on your scalp has a normal pH and thickness, your hair will grow at a healthy, normal rate.
That means if you take good care of your scalp, you can help prevent excessive shedding and stimulate growth. It’s not going to make your hair grow faster than it should naturally, but it can help prevent any scalp conditions that could make your hair fall out more or not grow as well. Taking good care of your scalp is especially important if you get a lot of chemical hair treatments like colour or relaxers, or if you style your hair a lot and you have thinning edges. Scalp treatments can also help alleviate common conditions like dandruff.
What can you do to encourage a healthy scalp, and therefore healthy hair growth? In addition to protecting your hair from sun damage, staying hydrated and eating a nutritious, balanced diet, you can try some natural at-home scalp stimulating treatments, like these:
Ginger Scalp Stimulating Treatment
One of our favourite natural hair resources, NaturallyCurly.com, notes that ginger has been used as a scalp treatment for thousands of years in traditional Indian medicine (also known as Ayurveda).
To help stimulate healthy hair growth and fight dandruff, they recommend massaging a mixture of fresh grated ginger, olive oil and lemon juice into your hair and leaving it in for 30 minutes to overnight before rinsing.
To treat thinning edges, they recommend massaging a mixture of fresh ginger juice and jojoba oil into your edges every night. This should help prevent further breakage and help stimulate healthy growth.

Clarifying Fennel Seed Scalp Treatment
Ensuring your scalp is clean and free from things that can clog pores like dead skin cells, dirt and excess sebum can help stimulate healthy growth as well. NaturallyCurly.com recommends rinsing your hair with a mixture of water and fennel seed powder after you shampoo and condition. Bonus: fennel seed can also be used to clarify your skin if you are prone to breakouts. Get the recipe here.
Apple Cider Vinegar Rinse
Apple cider vinegar is something many people already have in their kitchens that can clarify your scalp and also help balance its pH. It conditions the hair and removes build up, and can even help treat dandruff. All you have to do is make a quick and easy ACV mixture and rinse a couple times a week. Get the recipe here.
Essential Oil Scalp Massage
Massaging your scalp on a regular basis can do wonders for healthy hair growth, and those results are magnified if you massage using essential oils known for their scalp nourishing qualities. Which essential oils should you look for? Rosemary, lavender, ylang-ylang, peppermint and ginger (as mentioned above) are all used to stimulate the scalp and promote growth. Just use a few drops at a time and massage your hair as often as you can–daily is preferred! Get your significant other to do it for you as a relaxing treat.
