For those that don’t know – a weave is a hairstyle that involves braiding your natural hair close to your scalp and weaving hair extensions into the braids. Hair weaves and extensions first appeared in Ancient Egypt, where men and women extended the length of their hair for a more elegant look. Today, weaves are a popular choice for people who want fuller, longer, flowing locks.

Hair weaves are also great because they protect your natural hair, the results are instant, and you can dye them and style them any way you like. If you get a good, high quality weave, it can look beautiful for months.

Our hair stylists at Studio 86 have years of experience installing hair weaves, so we decided to put together a little Weaves 101 lesson to help you get the most of your weave experience.

1.) Use virgin hair. Virgin human hair usually comes from a single source and has never been dyed or chemically processed. This kind of hair looks better, lasts longer and you can style it however you like, which is not always possible with artificial hair.

2.) Choose a hair type that gives you the texture you want. Virgin Indian hair is a popular choice because it’s the most versatile for styling. You can wear it wavy or straight, while Asian hair doesn’t hold curl as well, if at all. Choose a hair type that’s most compatible with the style you want to wear. You can also blend hair types for a customized texture.

3.) Buy more hair for longer lengths. If you’re going really long, such as 28 inches or longer, you’ll want to stock up on enough hair for an appropriate thickness. Nothing looks worse than long, stringy extensions that are too thin. Buy between three and five bundles for longer styles.

4.) Take care of your extensions. Take measures to protect your hair extensions as you would your natural hair. Wrap it up at night to protect your edges, and don’t go overboard with heat styling, which can cause damage.

5.) Don’t wear extensions longer than eight weeks. Wearing your extensions for too long can damage your natural hair, so be sure to give it a break from the braid tension.

6.) Book a consultation with a weave specialist. If you’re thinking about getting a weave, you should consult a professional first. They can help you select an appropriate weave hairstyle, buy the right hair and also ensure your weave stays looking beautiful for as long as possible.

If you’re thinking about exploring the wonderful world of weaves, our hair stylists at our Yorkville salon can help! Book your consultation today.
